Saying “I Do” Again
Thinking about what do get your sweetie next year for Valentine’s Day other than the cliched box of chocolate and bouquet of flowers? Wait until you see what couples do here in Sarasota! Surprise your honey and come down to join the celebration.
Every Valentine’s Day hundreds of couples flock to Siesta Key Beach (the #1 beach in the country) to renew their commitment by participating in the “Say I Do Again” event sponsored by the Sarasota County Parks and Recreation. 2016 drew 900 couples.
I happened to be leaving the beach after a day of shelling and sandcastle-building when I stumbled across the romantic event. A line of couples waiting to re-up their nup looped around the beach waiting to have their picture taken under an archway of roses. Some women wore white veils and long dresses; several men sported suits and tuxedos. Others were bedecked in flowers, beads, sandals, and shorts. All looked excited to participate in the annual beach ritual held on pearl-white sand which reflected the sparkle in their eyes.
Music wafted across the beach while couples held roses, repeated vows, and celebrated with wedding cake — and I suspect a hidden bottle of champagne in their cooler. What better way is there to show your sweetheart you are in it forever?
The Sarasota Spectator
Our Sarasota Spectator is Betsy Miller, a retired high school teacher and college professor. Originally from Columbus, Betsy has fallen in love with the Gulf Coast of Florida, especially Sarasota. Blogging about the area has been a creative outlet for the writer, opening up an avenue of exploration. You may find the bon vivant enjoying happy hour at a tiki bar, shopping on historic Main Street, or seated at a concert or show at a local theater. Chances are you also might find her buried in a book on one of our beautiful beaches. Asked to give one word about her feelings for Sarasota, Betsy replied, “Smitten.”
